To benefit from this support, teachers’ official residence must be more than 60 kilometers away from the educational establishment where they teach, according to Nuno Piteira Lopes, the vice-president of the Cascais City Council, who explained this to Lusa agency.
“This measure is part of the Cascais Local Housing Strategy and aims, first and foremost, to offer affordable housing to the population and essential professionals for the municipality, such as teachers,” he justified.
The councilor, who is also responsible for housing promotion, stated that the municipality will immediately begin by making four houses available, which will accommodate 16 teachers.
The houses are located in Bicesse, Cobre, Tires, and Torres, and were acquired by the Cascais City Council.
Subsequently, eight more apartments will be made available, with the capacity to accommodate 24 teachers, as well as the Santa Maria do Mar Monastery, which can house 44 professionals.
The Cascais City Council will also provide temporary accommodation, offering 21 single or double rooms.
This temporary accommodation will have prices ranging from 275 to 400 euros, distributed across three institutions.
In total, 105 accommodations will be made available for teachers.
Teachers placed in Cascais school groups are eligible for this support, and applications can be made through the municipality’s portal at www.cascais.pt.
According to Nuno Piteira Lopes, the Cascais City Council will also provide housing for health professionals and security forces.
“The scarcity of rental offers and the high rental values, associated with the fact that many of these displaced professionals already have family housing expenses in another part of the country, has made their placement difficult and sometimes inhibits its acceptance, with incalculable losses for the school and students of the municipality,” emphasizes the councilor.
