“We had to evacuate the APCV of Oliveira do Conde and we have the users housed in our Market of Ideas [in the center of the village]. There are 18 users joined by 10 more people for safety reasons,” Paulo Catalino Ferraz, the mayor of Carregal do Sal, told Lusa news agency.
Those ten people are also from Oliveira do Conde, a location that “has the fire with active fronts” and, therefore, the village of Pinheiro “is being watched more closely.”
According to a source from the National Republican Guard (GNR), the fires are forcing the closure of several roads, such as Complementary Itinerary 12 (IC12) in Nelas, A25 (highway 25) in Mangualde, and national roads (EN) 231 and 329, in Nelas and Penalva do Castelo.
At 10:30 AM, the Viseu Dão Lafões Sub-regional Command mobilized 347 operatives, supported by 91 vehicles and three aerial resources, for the Folhadal fire in Nelas, which was reported at 11:53 AM on Monday.
In Penalva do Castelo, the fire that broke out in Miuzela at 00:15 AM on Monday remains active, having spread to the neighboring municipality of Mangualde, mobilizing 153 operatives, 45 vehicles, and two aerial resources.
Also in the Viseu district, in the municipality of Castro Daire, in the parish of Mões, another fire that started at 9:23 PM on Monday in a scrubland area in Soutelo, mobilized 169 operatives, supported by 44 vehicles and six aerial resources at 10:30 AM.
Still in the Viseu district, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Paiva, a fire in a forest area that started at 5:18 PM on Monday in Vila Cova à Coelheira involved 73 operatives with 19 vehicles and one aerial resource in firefighting efforts at the same time.
The fire in Mangualde caused one fatality during the night due to sudden illness, a Civil Protection source confirmed to Lusa today. According to a source from the Viseu Dão Lafões Sub-Regional Command, the house did not burn.
The fire in Nelas has so far caused seven injuries, two of which are in serious condition.
