Covid-19: Azores calls for preventive measures but denies abnormal situation

The Secretary for Health and Social Security of the Government of the Azores today called on the population to take measures to prevent covid-19, but rejected an “abnormal situation” in the trend of infections in the region.

“As a government official, what I’m calling for is for people to comply with the measures that were put in place at the time of the pandemic,” said Mónica Seidi, when questioned by journalists.

The regional secretary, who was speaking in Ponta Delgada on the sidelines of a meeting with the Order of Nurses, assured that the regional health directorate is monitoring the situation, but rejected the need to take “any other kind of action” at the moment.
“Everything else will be up to the regional directorate to follow up and monitor and then consider whether it’s necessary to take other action. As of today, I don’t have that information,” she added.

Also according to Mónica Seidi, there are cases of covid-19 in the region, but “the number of deaths that occur, as well as the number of daily hospitalizations, is no longer being reported”.

“If there is an abnormal situation, currently all entities will contact the regional health directorate,” she added.
The number of COVID-19 cases has been on the rise in Portugal in recent weeks. On June 26, 18 people died from covid-19, the highest daily figure in the last two years.

On June 17, the Directorate-General for Health announced that Portugal was seeing an upward trend in the transmission of covid-19, recommending the reinforcement of prevention measures, such as wearing a mask in the event of symptoms of respiratory infection.
