Three cyclists are about to embark on a 1,500 mile journey that will end in Wellington’s Portuguese twin city, Torres Vedras.
Pedro Narciso, 51, Paulo Serra, 44, and Nelson Silva, 50, will fly from the Portuguese city to Bristol airport before traveling to New Zealand and cycling home. Along the way, they will stop in Lagos, Portugal, and Villenave d’Ornon, Bordeaux, France.
The cross-continent ride is expected to take 16 days, with the cyclists aiming to cover 93 miles a day.
The initiative is supported by a number of organizations, including Portuguese fruit growers Emergosol and the Wellington City Council. The expedition is expected to cost around £5,800.
On arrival in Wellington, the Mayor will welcome Pedro, Paulo and Nelson to the Council Chamber for a flag signing ceremony and gift exchange. The group will then dine at Beambridge before retiring for the evening.
The cyclists are expected to arrive in Wellington around noon on April 28. They will depart the following morning to photograph the Wellington Monument before boarding a ferry back to the continent.
