Deadline to pay IMI begins today with increased discount for families in 267 municipalities

LISBON, PORTUGAL - MAY 7, 2018: town with orange roofs and square in Lisbon, Portugal

The deadline for paying the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) on rural and urban buildings begins today and for homeowners who live in one of the 267 municipalities that are members of the family IMI, there is an increase in the discount.

This involves the first installment of IMI or the payment of the entire tax if it is worth more than 100 euros, which can be done until the end of May.

IMI is levied on the taxable value (VPT) of real estate, with a single rate of 0.8% for rustic buildings (land) and a rate of between 0.3% and 0.45% for urban buildings (constructions and land for construction).

The tax is calculated and collected by the AT, but it is the municipalities that decide each year what rate they want to apply in their municipality, within the aforementioned ranges.

It is also up to the municipalities to inform the tax authorities whether they intend to apply the higher rates provided for in the law for vacant and ruined properties – this increase being higher when the houses are located in areas of urban pressure – as well as the family IMI, of which there are 267 this year (for the IMI for 2023) that intend to grant this discount, according to an official source from the Ministry of Finance in response to Lusa.

This means a reduction of 30 euros when there is one dependent; 70 euros when there are two and 140 when there are three or more dependents.

These values were reinforced through the Mais habitação law and compare with those previously in force, which were (in the same order) 20, 40 and 70 euros, depending on the number of dependents.

According to the law, IMI is paid in a single lump sum, in May, if all the properties owned by a taxpayer result in a tax value of up to 100 euros. Once this value is exceeded and up to 500 euros, the payment is split into two phases (to be paid in May and November).

For homeowners with IMI bills above 500 euros, the tax is divided into three parts, which have to be paid in May, August and November.

For several years now, property owners have had the option of paying the tax in full with the May settlement.
