Diver dies after getting into difficulty in the waters off Sesimbra

A 56-year-old man died today after falling into cardiorespiratory difficulties while scuba diving off Baleeira beach in Sesimbra, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said yesterday.

In the press release, it is reported that, following an alert received at 3:10 p.m. from a maritime-tourism company, the crew of the Sesimbra Life Saving Station immediately went to the scene, and elements of the local command of the Setúbal Maritime Police, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and the Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Brigade were also deployed to the port of Sesimbra.

“The maritime-tourist diving support vessel transported the victim to the port of Setúbal, and one of the lifeboat crew carried out resuscitation maneuvers throughout the trip, but it was not possible to reverse the situation,” the note said.

Death was declared in the port of Sesimbra by the INEM doctor and the body was later transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Setúbal by the Sesimbra Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the victim’s relatives.
