“The people identified so far have been exclusively tourists,” Manuel Filipe, the president of IFCN, told Lusa news agency, emphasizing that the infraction is punishable, within the scope of an administrative offense process, with fines between 250 and 500 euros for individuals and between 2,500 and 10,000 for companies.

The official explained that the fines are provided for in the regional legislative decree 24/2022/M and are applied to those identified as circulating on pedestrian routes that are temporarily or permanently closed.

Manuel Filipe indicated that the following routes are closed: Pico do Areeiro-Pico Ruivo, Achada do Teixeira-Pico Ruivo, Pico Ruivo-Encumeada, as well as Encumeada-Jardim da Serra and a trail in Paul da Serra.

“For safety reasons, circulation is prohibited,” he warned, noting that Forest Police surveillance in these locations has been reinforced.

The IFCN president does not provide any date for the reopening of these routes, which usually experience high demand, but adds that the institute is working towards partially opening the Pico do Areeiro path and the trail between Achada do Teixeira and the Pico Ruivo shelter.

The rural fire on Madeira Island broke out on August 14 in the mountains of Ribeira Brava municipality, progressively spreading to the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Santana. On Monday, after 13 days, the regional Civil Protection indicated that the fire was “totally extinguished.”

Data from the European Forest Fire Information System points to more than 5,104 hectares of burned area.

During the days when the fire raged, authorities instructed nearly 200 people to leave their homes as a precaution and made public reception facilities available, but many residents returned home.

Fighting the flames was made difficult by wind and high temperatures, but according to the Regional Government, there are no reports of injuries or destruction of essential public houses and infrastructure, although some small agricultural productions were affected, in addition to forest areas.

The Judicial Police is investigating the causes of the fire, but Miguel Albuquerque said it was arson.
