The epicenter was located about four kilometers east of Serreta.
An earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale was felt on the island of Terceira at 7:50 a.m. local time (8:50 a.m. in Lisbon) this Friday, according to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).
The epicentre was located about four kilometers east of Serreta, according to a statement from the agency.
“At the time of writing, no information has been received confirming that this earthquake was felt. If the situation so warrants, new reports will be issued,” the statement said.
The IPMA also pointed out that “locating the epicenter of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the data set, algorithms and seismic wave propagation models”, so “different agencies may produce slightly different results”.
“Similarly, preliminary determinations are usually corrected later by integrating more information. In all cases, always follow the instructions of the civil protection services. Any use of the contents of this press release should always refer to the source,” he said.
The event is part of the ongoing seismic crisis on Terceira Island since June 2022.
According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), slight (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when greater than 10).
