A concert by the group Monda, with guests Rui Veloso and Vitorino Salomé, is one of the main attractions of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of April 25 in Elvas (Portalegre), the city council has highlighted.
In a statement published on its website, the Municipality of Elvas indicated that the show, scheduled for 22:00 on the 27th at the Coliseu Comendador Rondão Almeida, will also feature the participation of the Portel Regional Singing Choir Group.
“It’s a unique show, purposely created for that space, for Elvas and for these celebrations,” the municipality’s councillor, Cláudio Monteiro, told Lusa today.
Exhibitions, debates, film screenings, visits to the Elvas Military Museum and other initiatives have marked the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25 in the border town this month.
“The program we developed was designed, above all, to involve the whole community, entities, to bring the history of April 25 to the 1st cycle, to kindergartens,” said the councillor.
To this end, a partnership was set up with the Arkus youth association to develop a play that is touring schools, telling the story of the Carnation Revolution “in 20 minutes”.
The exhibition “Movements of April 25 – Combat Vehicles” was inaugurated this morning in Praça da República, and other activities are scheduled for this day.
In addition to various exhibitions also open to the public at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the municipality has announced that on Monday, at 2pm, it will promote the initiative “The Mural of Freedom… April 25 in Schools”.
The mural, which will be open to the public at the Casa da Cultura in Elvas, was created by 1st cycle students from Elvas schools, who used cardboard to make a harpsichord.
On April 25, starting at 09:30, the Paços do Concelho building will host the flag-raising ceremonies, followed by the distribution of carnations in the historic center.
An extraordinary municipal assembly to commemorate the 50th anniversary of April 25 and the cultural event “Poetry and the Revolution”, with authors from the city, are other attractions on the program that day.
The program, on the 26th, includes visits to exhibitions and film screenings in various cultural venues in the city and, on the following day, in addition to the concert with Monda, Rui Veloso, Vitorino and the Grupo Coral de Cantares Regionais de Portel, the launch of the book entitled “Abril”, by Nuno Franco Pires, at the Elvas Military Museum.
Councillor Cláudio Monteiro also revealed that a chaimite had been placed at a traffic circle on Avenida de Badajoz, one of the “busiest” in Elvas, to mark the 50th anniversary of the revolution.
“Elvas has a strong component related to military tourism” and the vehicle “will remain there forever”, he said.
