Spain’s Pedro Martínez stunned Norway’s Casper Ruud today, beating the defending champion and world number eight tennis player in a three-set marathon to advance to the Estoril Open final.
The less credentialed Martínez, ranked 77th in the world, overcame the first seed’s favouritism to win 6-4, 4-6 and 6-4 in three hours and eight minutes.
The 26-year-old Spaniard will be playing in the final of an ATP tournament for the third time in his career. He is scheduled to face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who today beat Chile’s Cristian Garín in the other semi-final (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), in the final scheduled for Sunday at the Estoril Tennis Club.
