According to a statement from IPMA (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere), a yellow warning for the two islands of the Western group of the Azores will be active between 09:00 local time (10:00 in Lisbon) on Tuesday and 06:00 local time on Wednesday, due to “occasionally heavy precipitation, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.”
The IPMA states that “the approach of a cold frontal surface with undulations will cause a deterioration of weather conditions in the islands of the Western group.”
The Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service recommends taking self-protection measures, including securing roofs, doors, and windows, keeping drainage systems clean, and avoiding unnecessary travel due to the possible formation of water sheets on roads.
In unpaved areas, increased caution is advised as “water can cause soil erosion, leading to the collapse of walls, slopes, poles, among others.”
The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
