The national campaign of the Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome (BA), which took place over the weekend, raised more than 1,719 tons of food with the collaboration of 40,000 volunteers.
The food collection campaign took place in two thousand commercial surfaces in 21 regions of the country, informed the social solidarity institution.
“The amount of products donated once again attests to the solidarity of the Portuguese who, despite the inflationary context and the difficulties affecting many families, joined the proposal,” said a statement from BA.
“Our word is of gratitude to all those who accepted the invitation of the Food Bank of their region and donated their time, as volunteers, or their food, sharing what they bought for their homes, for their tables,” reacted the president of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger, Isabel Jonet, quoted in the note sent to the media.
“This real social network was thus renewed, in a feast of sharing and solidarity, notwithstanding the situation that affects so many families,” he stressed.
The food collected will be distributed, starting this week, in 2,600 social solidarity institutions, which, according to the BA, will deliver “to about 400 thousand people with proven food needs, in the form of baskets or prepared meals.
In addition to this face-to-face campaign, it will also be possible to contribute, until May 14, through vouchers available in supermarkets or an electronic platform available at www.alimentestaideia.pt.
Last year, the 21 operational Food Banks Against Hunger distributed a total of 28,900 tons of food, with an estimated overall value of more than 44.2 million euros.
