Images captured and shared on social media show the moment when flames reached Pico do Areeiro.
The fire that is devastating the region, but has not yet caused any fatalities, broke out on Wednesday. It has already ‘forced’ the Government to ‘ask for help’ from Spain, which will send Canadair aircraft through a European mechanism.
The images in question were recorded from Saturday until the early hours of Sunday. It’s worth noting that at 1,818 meters high, Pico do Areeiro is the highest peak in Madeira and the third highest in Portugal.
The set of videos shows the flames climbing the slope and reaching Pico do Areeiro and Curral das Freiras, giving an idea of the impact of this fire, which is being investigated by the Judicial Police. Eight days after it started, the fire has already destroyed more than 4,930 hectares in the region.
