The Portuguese Air Force released images on Wednesday of the rescue of a 71-year-old woman who was showing signs of a stroke on board a cruise ship off the coast of Montijo.
On Tuesday, the Portuguese Navy reported that it coordinated “a search and rescue operation for a 71-year-old woman who was on board the MSC Virtuosa Cruise Ship,” 200 nautical miles (about 360 kilometers) from Montijo.
The request for assistance was made by the ship, which reported that the passenger was showing signs of a stroke.
On Wednesday, the Air Force added that “the victim was recovered from the ship and transported by the EH-101 Merlin helicopter while the P-3C aircraft remained on site providing air support throughout the mission.”
“After the successful rescue, the woman was safely transported and handed over to an Immediate Life Support (SIV) ambulance in Portela,” the authority added.
A video of the rescue is available for viewing.
