On June 30, 2024, corresponding to 24 Sivan 5784 in the Hebrew calendar, the Jewish community of Lisbon came together for a poignant event held in Cascais. The gathering was marked by solemnity and solidarity as dozens of individuals participated in a tribute to their Israeli brothers and sisters who have been held hostage by the terrorist group Hamas for nearly nine months.
The event was graced by the presence of Israeli Ambassador Dor Shapira, whose attendance underscored the importance of the occasion. Ambassador Shapira’s participation brought a significant diplomatic weight to the proceedings, highlighting the international concern and the close ties between the Jewish communities worldwide and the state of Israel.
The event in Cascais was more than a mere gathering; it was a testament to the power of community and the importance of standing together in times of crisis. It reflected the Jewish value of “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh” (All of Israel is responsible for one another) and reinforced the collective resolve to support those in captivity.
Sharing the Message
As part of this collective effort, I shared a post about the event to extend its reach and impact. Social media can play a crucial role in amplifying voices and spreading awareness. By sharing the details of the event and the stories of the hostages, we aim to keep their plight in the public eye and maintain pressure on those in power to act decisively.
The Jewish community of Lisbon, through this event, has shown that even in the face of adversity, unity and solidarity can shine through. The tribute to the Israeli hostages was a moving reminder of the importance of community support and the enduring hope for their safe return.
