Iberian Theater Meeting in Évora

Six shows presented by companies from Portugal and Spain make up the program of the Iberian Theatre Meeting, which will take place in Évora from Monday until October 7, it was announced today.

Organized by the Centro Dramático de Évora (Cendrev), the initiative, which was first held in 2003, also includes talks with company representatives and other guests, such as set designers, musicians and costume designers.

According to the Alentejo company, the meeting kicks off with the show “A tragicomic Hamlet”, written and directed by Paulo Calatré, by Teatro das Beiras, on Monday, at 7pm, at Teatro Garcia de Resende, in the Alentejo city.

“O homem do caminho”, a play by Brazilian Plínio Marcos directed by José Caldas, in a co-production between A Escola da Noite and Quinta Parede, is the show scheduled for the following day, at 9.30pm, at the same venue.

On October 4, starting at 7pm, the Spanish company Tranvía Teatro’s show “Viaje a Pancaya”, based on texts from the Spanish Golden Age, will take to the stage of the Teatro Alentejano, directed by Cristina Yañez.

On the 5th, at 7pm, also at the Teatro Garcia de Resende, the Spanish Teatro Guirigai will perform “Libro de buen amor”, by Arcipreste de Hita, in a version by Agustín Iglesias.

“The Siege of Leningrad”, by José Sanchis Sinisterra, for Teatro em Curso, and “Magnético”, by Abel Neves, for Cendrev, will be presented on the 6th and 7th respectively, both at 7pm, in the same venue.

The talks, which are open to the public, will take place on the 4th, 5th and 6th, between 5:30pm and 7pm, and on the 7th, between 4pm and 7pm, also at the Teatro Garcia Resende, but in the main hall.

This meeting, said Cendrev, came about in 2003, as part of a partnership between the Alentejo company and the International Mediterranean Theater Institute.

“The road traveled until 2012 made it possible to develop a series of relationships in the Iberian space that have contributed to bringing these two realities closer together, through knowledge of the dramaturgies and theatrical work carried out in both countries,” he stressed.

Cendrev pointed out that, “even though the conditions for continuing to hold the meetings were lacking”, a group of Spanish and Portuguese companies with responsibilities in the management and programming of theaters strengthened relations and created the Iberian Circuit of Performing Arts in 2014.

This meeting, which has now resumed, is funded by the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) and the Évora City Council, as part of the Network of Portuguese Theatres and Cinemas.
