The documentary “Her name was Gisberta”, by Portuguese director Sérgio Galvão Roxo, has been selected for the US festival South By Southwest (SXSW), in March in Austin, Texas, the organization announced.

The program announced for the film and television section shows that among the works selected is a 360-degree immersive reality video documentary on the life of Brazilian trans woman Gisberta Salce, murdered in 2006 in Porto.

“Her name was Gisberta” is a Portuguese-Brazilian project by Sérgio Galvão Roxo, with illustration and animation by Pedro Velho and narration by Alexia Vitória and “was created as a tool for education, social intervention and activism against transphobia”, explains the author on the official website.

Also at the festival will be “Pedágio”, the second feature film by Brazilian director Carolina Markowicz, featuring Portuguese actor Isac Graça and co-produced by O Som e a Fúria.

The movie is about a woman, Suellen, who tries to raise money to help her son cure his homosexuality, with the support of a renowned foreign priest, according to the synopsis.

SXSW, which was first held in 1987, is an annual festival that takes over the city of Austin with simultaneous conferences, debates, films and dozens of concerts for an audience that includes the general public, but above all figures from the creative industry, promoters, publishers and agents.

The next edition is scheduled for March 8 to 16 and, as part of the music festival, there will be an already announced concert by Hause Plants, a band from Lisbon.

Guilherme Machado Correia, João Simões, Dani Oliveira Royo and João António Nunes da Silva released three EPs – “Film For Color Photos”, in 2021, “Sleeping With Weird People”, in 2022, and “Field Trip To Coney Island”, in 2023, on the North American label Spirit Goth.

The concert at SWSW marks the band’s return to the United States, where they spent most of last year in New York.
