IPMA puts Madeira archipelago under yellow warning for wind from 12:00 onwards

FUNCHAL, MADEIRA ISLAND -

The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for strong winds throughout the Madeira archipelago, which will be in force between 12:00 and 18:00 today.

The warning covers the south and north coasts of the island of Madeira, as well as mountainous areas and the island of Porto Santo.

In IPMA terminology, the yellow warning is the second least serious on a scale of three and means “risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation”.

The Captaincy of the Port of Funchal has also issued warnings for strong wind and sea turbulence, in force until 06:00 on Saturday.

“The entire maritime community and the population in general are advised to take precautions, both when preparing to go to sea and when they are at sea or in coastal areas,” the authority said in a statement.

The captaincy warns of the importance of reinforcing moorings and keeping a close watch on moored and anchored vessels and, on the other hand, avoiding walks by the sea or in areas exposed to sea waves, such as port protection jetties, cliffs or beaches, to avoid being surprised by a wave.

Another recommendation is to avoid recreational fishing, especially near the cliffs and cliff areas that are often hit by breaking waves.

“In these conditions, the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas,” he warns.
