Jardins do Marquês Festival kicks off today in Oeiras with Juan Luis Guerra

The Jardins do Marquês festival kicks off today in Oeiras with Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra, in an edition in which the line-up includes American Patti Smith and Brazilian Djavan, among others.

In its 4th edition, according to promoter Música no Coração, the Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley festival “presents seven unforgettable and intimate summer evenings, next to the gardens of the Marquês de Pombal Palace”, with a line-up that is “carefully selected and of enormous quality, with concerts divided between two outdoor stages, with national and international artists who embody the spirit of the event”.

Today, the first part of Juan Luis Guerra’s concert is performed by the Spanish band Los Romeros.

On the Nortada Stage, “with concerts interspersed with the main stage”, Portuguese singer Cristina Clara performs.

On Thursday, the show “Um tom sobre Jobim” (A Tone on Jobim), which brings together American singer Stacey Kent and Brazilian musician Danilo Caymmi, takes to the stage. The first part of the concert is given by the Portuguese Jazz & Poetry Ensemble, and on the second stage of the festival, Brazilian singer Joyce Cândido performs.

On Friday, the headliner is Brazilian singer Adriana Calcanhotto, who will be joined in the first part of the concert by fado singer Camané and pianist Mário Laginha.

Brazilian singer Leo Middea performs on the Nortada Stage.

Saturday’s highlight is the Kriol Kings project, which brings together Cape Verdean singers Nelson Freitas and Djodje.

On a day dedicated to Lusophony, the first part of Kriol Kings’ show will be performed by Tabanka Djaz, a band from Guinea-Bissau, and on the Nortada Stage there will be a meeting between Batida (Pedro Coquenão) and Bonga, in which one will play one song and the other another, in a moment “that transcends a simple DJ set”.

On Sunday, it’s Patti Smith’s turn to take the stage, performing with a band that includes guitarist and author Lenny Kaye, with whom she has collaborated since 1971, drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, bassist and keyboardist Tony Shanahan and guitarist Jackson Smith, Patti’s son.

The show won’t have a first half, but that day there will be two concerts on the Nortada Stage, by Portuguese singer Joana Alegre and the duo Blue & White Duet, by Portuguese violinists and siblings Hugo and Inês Lima.

On July 9, the Portuguese singer António Zambujo and the Brazilian Yamandu Costa are scheduled to perform. The first part will be performed by Brazilian musician Toquinho, with Brazilian singer Camila Faustino as his guest. On the Nortada Stage, Portuguese musician Martim Seabra will perform.

Jardins do Marquês ends on July 10 with Brazilian singer Djavan. Before the voice of songs such as “Um amor puro”, “Oceano” or “Meu bem querer”, Portuguese singer Irma takes to the stage. On the Nortada Stage, Brazilians A Cor do Som perform.
