The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued today due to the heat an orange warning, the second most serious on a scale of four, for Saturday and Sunday in Lisbon.
The IPMA indicated that the orange warning for the Lisbon district, where thousands of people are participating in World Youth Day (WYD), an event presided over by Pope Francis, will be active from 00:00 on Saturday.
IPMA forecasts point to very high maximum temperatures for Lisbon, with 37 degrees Celsius expected for Saturday and 40 degrees for Sunday.
The orange warning is issued by IPMA when there is a moderate to high risk weather situation.
On Saturday night, as part of WYD, Pope Francis has a vigil with young people in Lisbon’s Parque Tejo, at 09:00 on Sunday he celebrates Mass for WYD day in Parque Tejo and at 16:30 he takes part in a meeting of WYD volunteers on the Passeio Marítimo de Algés.
Pope Francis will be on Saturday morning in Fátima, Santarém, a district that IMPA has placed on yellow warning (third on the scale) due to the persistence of high values of the maximum temperature.
IMPA predicts a temperature of 34 degrees for Fatima on Saturday.
Lisbon is hosting the World Youth Day, with the presence of Pope Francis, which, until Sunday, brings together more than a million pilgrims from all over the world.
