The fires endangered “a significant area of forest”, as well as “houses and factories in the area”.
A 38-year-oldmanwas arrested by the Judiciary Police because he was strongly suspected of committing seven forest fire crimes in the town of Macieira de Cambra, in Vale de Cambra.
The crimes date back to “last April and May” and “the fires were caused using direct flame”, the PJ said in a statement.
The accused did not indicate “a specific motivation” for setting the fire, which ended up putting “a significant area of forest in danger”, as well as “houses and factories in the area”.
The suspect has no criminal record and lives in the area. He will now be brought before a court for first questioning and coercive measures.
