Marcelo expresses sorrow and solidarity with Joe Biden for the fires in Hawaii

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent a message of condolence to the US counterp Rebelo de Sousaart, Joe Biden, for the tragic consequences of the fires in Hawaii, which killed 93 people according to the latest balance.

In a note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic it is stated that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “conveyed regret and solidarity to the President of the USA, Joe Biden”.

“The President of the Republic sent his US counterpart, Joe Biden, a message of condolences and solidarity for the tragic consequences caused by the fires in the State of Hawaii,” the text says.

The death toll from the wildfires that hit the US island of Maui in the Hawaiian archipelago has risen to 93, local authorities said on Sunday.

Officials predict that more victims will be found as the search continues in the devastated areas.

Also in a statement released on Sunday by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some Lusodescendants who were missing in the fires on the island of Maui have already been located and Portugal continues to monitor the situation in Hawaii.

In the same statement “it is not excluded that there are still missing persons”.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the fires are already the “largest natural disaster Hawaii has ever experienced,” according to CNN, surpassing the 61 confirmed deaths following a tsunami in 1960.

Before Hawaii became a state in 1959, a tsunami in 1946 killed 158 people.
