The President of the Republic today promulgated the amnesty law, regretting that it does not have immediate effects and without prejudice to a later evaluation “with the aim of being able to extend its scope without age restrictions”.
In a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, it reads that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “decided to promulgate the Amnesty Law”, while regretting that it “will not have immediate effects, as it will only come into force on September 1st”.
This enactment takes place, reads the note, “without prejudice to the subsequent assessment of the issue of respect for the principle of equality, with the aim of being able to extend its scope without age restrictions”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promulgates this diploma “considering the merit of the amnesty and pardon of penalties in the context of the Pope’s visit and the very large parliamentary majority that approved this diploma, and despite the contradiction between the age limit for its application to crimes, but without an age limit for its application to administrative offenses, not wanting to harm the beneficiaries already provided for under the law”.
