The president of the PSD said today that he expects to be appointed prime minister and, if the President of the Republic so decides, to form a government based on a majority “made up of PSD and CDS-PP MPs”.
As he left the audience with the President of the Republic, Luís Montenegro declined to respond directly to questions from the media about the possibility of IL also joining the executive or about the possible presentation of an amending budget.
“All issues that have to do with the exercise of government activity will be taken when there is a government, communicated and explained when there is a government,” he said, referring to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s exclusive competence to make this choice.
However, when asked which majority he intends to govern with if he is appointed, he replied: “The largest parliamentary representation in the Assembly of the Republic that will take office is from AD. There is a majority, relative, not absolute. That majority is made up of PSD and CDS-PP MPs, and it is on the basis of that majority, if that is what the President of the Republic understands, that we will present our government.”
As soon as the meeting, which lasted about an hour and 40 minutes, was over, the Presidency of the Republic’s press office said that “there may be another hearing” later today with the president of the PSD and leader of the AD, Luís Montenegro, once the results of the emigration votes have been determined.
