More companies are being created in Portugal. The sector that stands out may surprise

Since the beginning of the year and until May 31, 23 495 new companies were set up, which corresponds to a growth of 6.3% over the same period last year (+ 1,383 companies). The data are from the most recent barometer from Informa D&B.

The barometer shows that although with this record in the year-to-date, the month of May is marked by a drop in start-ups compared to May 2022 (-8.9% start-ups), breaking the cycle of growth in entrepreneurship that had been registered for 12 consecutive months.

Among the sectors with an increase in set-ups in the first five months of 2023 were Transportation (+1,370 set-ups; +90%), Accommodation and Catering (+243 set-ups; +12%), General Services (+196 set-ups; +6.3%), and Construction (+100 set-ups; +4.0%).

The sectors that show a decline in the creation of new companies include Real Estate (-234 new companies; -9.5%), Information and Communication Technologies (-111 new companies; -7.3%), Manufacturing (-92 new companies, -8.9%), and Agriculture and other natural resources (-87 new companies, -11%).

The same barometer indicates that 4832 companies closed in the first five months of the year, which represents a decrease of 7.6% (-398 closures) compared to the same period in 2022.

However, in an analysis of the last 12 months, closures increased in more than half of the business sectors when compared with the previous 12 months. The biggest increases are in the Information and Communication Technology (+12%) and Real Estate (+6.5%) sectors.
