More than 1.2 million euros have already filed their tax returns

The Finance Portal registered the submission of more than 1.2 million annual IRS declarations, at the end of the first week of the three-month period that taxpayers have to comply with this declarative obligation.

Despite the fact that several years ago there were no longer different phases or deadlines for submitting tax returns depending on income, data from the Finance Portal shows that the majority of households that have already filed their annual IRS accounts only had income from dependent work and/or pensions in 2023.

Of the 1,242,448 households (including single taxpayers and married or unmarried couples) who have already filed their personal income tax returns, more than a million (1,011,923) had only salaries from employment or pensions to declare.

Although this year there has been no indication of the average time taken for the refund to be paid, recent years have shown that the tax refund reaches taxpayers less than 20 days after the return has been submitted – when no discrepancies or errors have been detected.

Last year (for the 2022 campaign) the average time taken to pay the refund was 19.5 days, and 16 days for the automatic IRS.

According to the law, taxpayers who did not withhold tax or did so in sufficient amounts throughout 2023 have until August 31st to pay the missing tax.

The deadline for submitting the annual IRS tax return is June 30th.

In 2023, the Tax and Customs Authority registered 6,341,880 IRS declarations through the Finance Portal – this number includes replacement declarations and declarations relating to income from previous years.
