A 43-year-old man was also identified.
The National Republican Guard (GNR) seized more than 600 kilos of Japanese clams in Alcochete, Setúbal district.
In a statement, the GNR explains that it detected “a vehicle transporting these bivalves without a registration document, which did not allow the origin of the shellfish to be determined, nor did it allow the mandatory traceability standards to be met”.
In this context, and with the “possibility of them constituting a danger to public health”, the GNR identified a 43-year-old man and drew up an administrative offense notice for lack of a registration document. The bibalves, in turn, were seized and, “after a hygiene check”, will be destroyed.
“The GNR recalls that the capture, deposit and dispatch of this type of bivalves, without being subjected to purification or hygiene control, can jeopardize public health, if they are introduced for consumption, due to possible contamination with toxins, and the document proving the origin is fundamental for the prevention of irregular introduction for consumption,” the statement concludes.
