The action began on April 24 and 25.
The Portuguese Navy accompanied a container ship from the Russian Federation, Sparta IV, which began on April 24, at the northern limit of the continent’s Exclusive Economic Zone, off Caminha, and ended on Thursday, April 25, off the southern coast of the Algarve.
In a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the Navy revealed that the NRP Viana do Castelo was involved in the action, with the support of the Maritime Operations Center, “which guarantees active and continuous surveillance of areas under national sovereignty or jurisdiction”.
“Serving Portugal at sea, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, the Navy will continue to accompany the passage of this type of ship, through permanent monitoring of maritime spaces under national sovereignty or jurisdiction, in order to protect Portugal’s interests at and through the sea,” reads the same note.
