Neither the CDS was a crutch, nor the PSD a surrogate

The president of the CDS-PP today rejected the idea that his party was a crutch in the last legislative elections, or that the PSD, the coalition partner in the Democratic Alliance, was a “surrogate”, insisting that the centrists were decisive in the electoral result.

“Neither the CDS-PP was a crutch nor the PSD a surrogate. Their votes were absolutely decisive for the victory over the PS and the left and for a new political cycle,” said Nuno Melo, at the entrance to the 31st CDS-PP Congress, taking place today and Sunday in Viseu.

In the opinion of the centrist leader, “the CDS has also shown its usefulness by the votes it won on the right” in the legislative elections on March 10, in which the centrists voted in the Democratic Alliance coalition, which brought together PSD, CDS-PP and PPM.

“The CDS was decisive, the CDS didn’t get where it is out of favor,” he stressed.

Nuno Melo pointed out that the centrists are in a governing coalition with the PSD “carrying their uniqueness”, as a “Christian Democrat, humanist, personalist party, open to liberal, conservative currents”.

“There would be no point in a coalition if the CDS didn’t add, the CDS adds, has added votes, mandates and our uniqueness. We don’t dilute ourselves,” he said.

The CDS-PP will meet today and Sunday in congress to re-elect Nuno Melo as president and choose the new bodies, about a month after the legislative elections that marked the party’s return to parliament and government.
