If you have a shared Netflix account, then say goodbye. Netflix today put an end to account sharing in Portugal, justifying that this is affecting the ability to invest in great movies and series.
A statement was posted on social media, along with a link to the official website. This restriction has been implemented not only in Portugal, but also in Spain, Canada, and New Zealand.
Here is the message on Netflix’s official website:
At Netflix, we have always tried to make it easier for people living in the same house to share their Netflix account, so we offer features such as different profiles and the ability to watch Netflix on multiple screens simultaneously. Despite their success, these features have created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. Today, over 100 million households share accounts – which impacts our ability to invest in great series and movies.
So over the past year we have explored different approaches to solving this problem in Latin America, and now the time has come to extend the implementation of this feature, starting today, to other countries such as Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. Our focus has been on giving our members control over who has access to their account.
- Setting the primary location: we’ll help members make this setting, to ensure that everyone living in their household can use their Netflix account.
- Manage access and devices: members can now easily manage who has access to their account from the new “Manage access and devices” page.
- Transfer profiles: people using one account can now easily transfer a profile to a new account that they pay for membership, keeping their personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and more.
- Watch Netflix on the go: Members can continue watching Netflix on their personal devices or log in to a new TV, for example, in a hotel room or vacation home.
Buy an additional member option: In several countries (including Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain), members with a Standard or Premium plan can add additional secondary member accounts for up to two people outside their home, each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login details and password, for an additional monthly cost of $3.99 per person.
