Next week will be windy (with abnormal temperature for the season)

The week from September 9 to 15 will be marked by wind and “low temperature values for the time of year.” This “thermal discomfort,” which will be felt more strongly on the coast, is due to an “intense anticyclone” in the Azores region and a “depression area” in the North Sea.

“The most relevant weather conditions will be strong winds and low temperature values for the time of year. The combination of these two factors will result in thermal discomfort that will be felt more significantly in the western coastal regions and highlands,” said the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in a statement.

The organization detailed that “this somewhat anomalous weather situation for the season is due to an intense anticyclone located in the Azores region, which extends across the North Atlantic to Greenland,” as well as “a depression area centered in the North Sea,” which will determine “an intense northerly flow over the western part of the Iberian Peninsula.”

“The lowest maximum temperature values, around 20°C, will occur on the coast of the North and Center regions, and the highest values, around 30°C, in the interior of Alentejo and Algarve,” the statement reads.

Nevertheless, the minimum temperature will also have relatively low values, around 10°C, particularly in the interior of the North and Center regions. It may even be lower in the highlands.

The wind will blow “moderate to strong on the coast, between 30 km/h to 40 km/h,” with gusts that may exceed 70 km/h in some places on the west coast on September 10 and 11.

There is also the possibility of light precipitation, probably on September 12, in the regions north of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system, according to IPMA.

In Madeira, maximum temperatures will reach 29ºC, while minimum temperatures will be around 20ºC.

In the Azores, the scenario will be similar, with maximum temperatures expected to be between 24º and 29ºC, and minimum temperatures between 22º and 19ºC.
