According to the ON statement, the measure is already possible in one of the 483 notary offices distributed throughout the country and will also be available online starting from September.
“In the 21st century, at a time when technologies allow for greater mobility, when it is possible to cross borders quickly, and it is increasingly common for citizens to live or work in more than one country, it is essential to facilitate obtaining a European Certificate of Succession,” said Jorge Batista da Silva, the president of ON.
This certificate can be requested by heirs, legatees with succession rights (such as those included in a will to receive certain assets), testamentary executors, or estate administrators who want to assert their rights in any Member State, and aims to streamline more complex international succession processes.
“Notaries are familiar with Portuguese legislation and have a presence throughout the national territory, so it makes perfect sense for notary offices to be able to issue this instrument that facilitates successions within the European Union,” concluded the president.
