Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges was eliminated today on his debut at the Masters 1,000 in Madrid, losing to Spain’s Jaume Munar in two sets in the first round of the clay-court tournament.
Nuno Borges, ranked 56th in the world, was beaten 7-5, 6-4 after an hour and 58 minutes by a player ranked slightly lower in the ATP ranking, in which he is 73rd.
The Portuguese number one and the only Portuguese tennis player in the world’s top 100 suffered a break of serve in the opening game, but managed to draw level at 4-4, before suffering another – and decisive – break, which allowed Munar to establish a 6-5 lead and then close out the opening set.
The scenario repeated itself in the second set, with Munar quickly imposing himself on Borges’ serve (2-1) and, although the Portuguese player reacted immediately (2-2), he gave in again later (4-3) and allowed his opponent to win the match on his third match point.
Nuno Borges, 27, suffered the same fate as last year at the Spanish event, where he was knocked out in the first round by the American Marcos Giron, and still has only one round to his name at the Masters 1,000, in Rome in 2023.
