The decriminalization decree for medically assisted death, which was vetoed by the President of the Republic last week and which the PS has already stated it will confirm, will be voted on again on May 12.
The socialist spokesperson for the leaders’ conference, Maria da Luz Rosinha, announced this schedule to parliament journalists at the conclusion of the meeting.
This will be the fifth time that parliament has cast a final vote on a euthanasia bill.
This diploma was vetoed by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Wednesday, requesting clarification on two points.
The head of state dismissed constitutional concerns regarding the parliament’s decree to decriminalize medically assisted death, stating that he vetoed the legislation due to “a problem of precision.”
In response to this veto, PS, IL, and BE declared that they will proceed with the decree’s confirmation, thereby forcing its implementation.
According to the Constitution, when confronted with a veto, the Assembly of the Republic may confirm the vote by an absolute majority of deputies in full exercise of their duties, 116 of 230, in which case the President of the Republic must promulgate the law within eight days of receiving it.
The president returns the euthanasia bill to the legislature without enactment.
