In the last three days, 1,162 accidents took place on Portuguese roads, causing one death and 358 injuries, 24 of which were serious, according to figures released today by the PSP and GNR.
Between Friday and Sunday, the GNR recorded 684 accidents, causing one death and 211 injuries, including 17 serious ones.
In the same period, the PSP recorded 478 accidents on the roads under its jurisdiction, causing 147 injuries, including seven serious ones.
The deadly victim mentioned by the GNR is a woman who was run over on Sunday by a light vehicle in the town of Turquel, in the municipality of Alcobaça.
The data released is part of the surveillance and patrol operations set up by the PSP and GNR for the Christmas and New Year festive season and is still provisional.
According to GNR and PSP statistics, in the last three days 217 drunk drivers (with a blood alcohol level considered a crime) and 96 drivers without a legal driving license were arrested.
Among the nearly 30,000 drivers inspected and the more than 17,000 vehicles checked by radar, the GNR and PSP identified more than 6,000 administrative offenses, including speeding (2,365), lack of periodic inspections (493), driving under the influence of alcohol (310), lack of insurance (158) and improper use of cell phones (137).
The GNR and PSP’s Christmas and New Year 2023/2024 operations began on December 15 and end on January 2.
