One dead and two seriously injured in explosion at cotton factory in Vila Verde

A 60-year-old man died yesterday following an explosion at a cotton factory in Vila Verde, in the district of Braga, which also caused two serious injuries, police sources told Lusa.

The alert for the accident was given at 17:45 and the two injured, with serious burns, were transported to the Hospital de S. João, in Porto and to the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra (CHUC).

One of the injured was transported by the INEM helicopter, said a source from the Cávado Sub-regional Command.

GNR source told Lusa that the deadly victim was a 60-year-old man.

The Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicles (VMER) of Braga and Barcelos, an INEM motorcycle and a team of INEM psychologists were mobilized to the scene.

The explosion also resulted in a fire that was fought by the fire departments of Vila Verde, Esposende and Amares.

By 20:30, a source from the Cávado Sub-regional Command said that the fire was out and that the means were already demobilizing.

In total, 65 operatives were on the scene, supported by 24 vehicles and an aerial means, according to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).
