According to a statement from the Matosinhos City Council released today, “the viaduct over the A28 that will connect Matosinhos to Senhora da Hora will be inaugurated on Saturday” at 11:00 AM.

“The structure of the viaduct was placed on site on May 31 of this year, finally responding to a project promised by the Municipality for over a decade, which had started in 2021 but was suspended in the same year due to a dispute with IP [Infraestruturas de Portugal] over the project,” recalls the council led by Luísa Salgueiro (PS).

The viaduct weighs about 420 tons and cost five million euros, with “the objective of alleviating traffic on the A28, particularly at the AEP roundabout,” connecting the Barranha area to the Estádio do Mar, passing over the highway.

The structure will be named after Vítor Oliveira, in honor of the former Matosinhos football player and coach who passed away in 2020, “who was, among other clubs, a player and coach of Leixões SC.”

The inauguration ceremony will include a tribute to Vítor Oliveira through “an intervention by his lifelong friend, former coach Professor Henrique Calisto, who will speak on behalf of the family.”

Vítor Oliveira, who died in November 2020 in Matosinhos at the age of 67, was known as the ‘king of promotions,’ achieving 11 promotions to the main tier of Portuguese football in 18 attempts, serving Paços de Ferreira (1991 and 2019), Académica (1997), União de Leiria (1998), Belenenses (1999), Leixões (2007), Arouca (2013), Moreirense (2014), União da Madeira (2015), Desportivo de Chaves (2016), and Portimonense (2017).

In over 30 years, between 1978 and 2020, he managed Famalicão, Portimonense, Maia, Paços de Ferreira, Gil Vicente, Vitória de Guimarães, Académica, União de Leiria, Sporting de Braga, Belenenses, Rio Ave, Moreirense, Leixões, Trofense, Desportivo das Aves, Arouca, União da Madeira, Desportivo de Chaves, and Paços de Ferreira.

As a footballer, he wore the shirts of Leixões, Paredes, Famalicão, Sporting de Espinho, Sporting de Braga, and Portimonense.
