A 54-year-old man was arrested in the district of Aveiro on suspicion of being responsible for a forest fire that occurred on the afternoon of September 17 in the locality of Bunheiro, Murtosa, the Judicial Police (PJ) revealed in a statement released today.
According to the inspectors, the suspect set fire to an extensive forest area using direct flame, putting several homes and agricultural facilities at risk.
The fire did not assume large proportions thanks to its prompt detection and firefighting efforts.
So far, it has not been possible to determine the motivation for such an act. However, the PJ reveals that the suspect acted within a context of “alcohol dependency.”
The man will now be presented to the judicial authorities in the district of Aveiro for his first judicial interrogation and to learn about the coercive measures deemed appropriate.
