In a statement, the Judiciary Police (PJ) reports that they “identified and arrested a 48-year-old man, suspected of being the perpetrator of at least four forest fires that occurred between May and August of this year in the municipality of Gondomar.”
“The fires occurred on May 11, July 16 and 22, and August 4, in the locality of Foz do Sousa” and “were allegedly caused using direct flame. The investigation has not yet determined any rational motivation or plausible explanation for the commission of these acts,” states the PJ.
The police force recalls that “the detainee has a criminal record for arson in an urban environment.”
The suspect will be presented to the judicial authority for questioning and the application of coercive measures.
The arrest was made by the Northern Directorate of the PJ, “with the collaboration of the Working Group for the Reduction of Ignitions in Rural Areas – Northern Zone.”
