Teams from the Criminal Information Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department of Setúbal of the Judicial Police (PJ) conducted several “inspection actions on nine goldsmith and jewelry shops” in Moita, Setúbal district.
These actions allowed the collection of sufficient evidence for “the initiation of an administrative offense procedure, four notifications for document submission, and four notifications for the presentation of a high number of precious metal articles intended for melting that were no longer in the commercial establishments, as required by law.”
In a statement, the PJ explains that “these inspection actions were accompanied by experts from the National Mint, who collaborated with the PJ mainly in the analysis of the transacted items.”
The fines can range from three thousand to ninety thousand euros.
The objective is “to verify compliance with legal obligations regarding the transactions carried out and the objects traded, as well as the possible practice of crimes of terrorism financing, money laundering, and organized crime.”
“The fines for situations of non-compliance with legal obligations are considered very serious, ranging from three thousand to ninety thousand euros, depending on the size of the company,” warns the PJ in the informative note.
