In the first half of this year, the port of Sines recorded a 14% growth in cargo handled compared to the same period last year, with an emphasis on containerized cargo, according to a statement released today.
According to the note from APS – Administração dos Portos de Sines e do Algarve, the infrastructure “closed the first half of 2024 with a year-on-year growth of 14% in the overall total of cargo handled, with containerized cargo standing out, with a year-on-year growth of 25%, corresponding to handling of around 989,000 TEUs”, a measure of containers in which one TEU corresponds to a 20-foot container.
According to the entity, “the Sines Container Terminal – Terminal XXI claims 50% of the port’s total cargo volume, followed by the Liquid Bulk Terminal with 43%”.
For its part, the Multipurpose Terminal, “which is beginning to take the first steps towards recovering from the loss of volumes associated with coal” recorded “growth of 74% compared to the same period in 2023, corresponding to 303,000 tons”. This terminal has handled cargo such as “iron ore, various project cargoes, gypsum, urea and wood pellets”, said APS.
Exports grew by 7% year-on-year, it added.
“2024 is expected to be a year of strong growth for the port of Sines, especially in terms of containerized cargo” where it is expected to “reach the 2 million TEU mark”, he concluded.
