Portugal have dropped from sixth to eighth place in the FIFA rankings, in a hierarchy led by Argentina and in which Spain, the new European champions, have risen to third place, the world soccer governing body announced today.
Dismissed from Euro2024 in the quarter-finals after losing to France in a penalty shoot-out, Portugal dropped two places and are now just behind the Netherlands, who remain in seventh place.
At the top are world champions Argentina, who won the Copa America on Sunday, followed by second-placed France and Spain, who also won their fourth European title on Sunday and climbed five places on the podium.
England, Euro2024 finalists, moved up from fifth to fourth place, ahead of Brazil, who dropped one place, and Belgium, sixth, after dropping three places.
Colombia, who were Copa America finalists, climbed three places and entered the top 10 in ninth place, ahead of Italy, who remain in 10th place.
Among the teams coached by Portuguese, the United Arab Emirates, led by Paulo Bento, remained in 69th place, while Angola, led by Pedro Gonçalves, climbed to 90th.
Luís Boa Morte’s Guinea-Bissau climbed to 114th and Rui Bento’s Kuwait rose to 136th.
