Portuguese cinemas reached 6.2 million euros in revenue in March, an increase of 46.3% compared to the same period in 2023 and the best figure since March 2018, the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA) announced today.
However, the number of spectators needed to reach the figure achieved in March this year is lower than that recorded in March 2018. While in March 2018 national cinemas recorded 6.3 million euros in revenue with 1.2 million admissions, in March this year the 6.2 million euros were achieved with 946 thousand spectators.
In the first quarter of 2024, cinemas recorded 16.6 million euros in revenue, 17.4% more than in the first quarter of 2023, with 2.7 million spectators, 14.6% more than last year.
The most-watched list for March is headed by the second chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” saga, with more than 258,000 tickets sold since its premiere on February 29, followed by “Kung Fu Panda 4”, by Mike Mitchell and Stephanie Stine, “Bob Marley: One Love”, by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the new Godzilla vs. King Kong, by Adam Wingard, and “Ghostbusters: Empire of Ice”, by Gil Kenan.
The most watched Portuguese film of the year up to March is “A Semente do Mal”, by Gabriel Abrantes, which was seen by 16,827 people and brought in 102,000 euros in revenue.
