The President of the Portuguese Parliament, Social Democrat José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, will participate institutionally in the traditional parade of the April 25 celebrations, in the afternoon, on Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon.
This unprecedented participation of a parliamentary president in the traditional parade promoted by the 25 de Abril Association was conveyed to journalists by the spokesperson for the leaders’ conference, PSD MP Jorge Paulo Oliveira.
“In the traditional April 25th parade, promoted by the April 25th Association, the Assembly of the Republic will be represented institutionally by the President of the Assembly of the Republic. This initiative aims to reinforce the dignity and symbolism of this day,” said the spokesperson for the leaders’ conference.
Jorge Paulo Oliveira said that José Pedro Aguiar-Branco’s participation in the parade, in which he may be accompanied by representatives of different parliamentary groups, is also intended to give visibility to parliament and bring elected representatives closer to voters.”
“At the meeting of the leaders’ conference, the different political forces agreed on this institutional presence. If the parliamentary groups so wish, they can accompany the President of the Assembly of the Republic,” he added.
