The same source stated that the defendant will await trial at the Leiria Prison Establishment.
On Friday afternoon, the defendant allegedly went to his aunt’s house asking for money, and upon her refusal, he reportedly assaulted her violently and then suffocated her to death with a cloth.
The woman, who lived alone, was found dead “with signs of violence,” according to the Judicial Police (PJ).
After committing the homicide, the suspect allegedly took several of the victim’s belongings and left the residence where the events occurred.
As the victim had not been seen for a few days, at the request of family members, firefighters were called on Monday at 12:20 PM to open the door of the residence by forced entry.
The firefighters, accompanied by the PSP (Public Security Police), found the woman dead inside the house with signs of violence, and the Judicial Police was called to the scene.
The PJ investigation led inspectors to the victim’s nephew, added the official, emphasizing that there was “a significant difference in strength” between the two.
Avelino Lima further stated that the PJ seized “the lady’s personal belongings” at the nephew’s house, believing that “a considerable volume of goods has been recovered.”
The man, with no prior criminal record, was arrested on Monday, not in the act, and confessed to the facts to the Judicial Police, he added.
