PSP recorded four incidents on the second day of WYD

The PSP registered four occurrences on Wednesday, the second day of World Youth Day (WYD), including the explosion of firecrackers in an accommodation where French pilgrims were, which did not cause injuries.

According to data provided today by the Internal Security System (SIS), the explosion of firecrackers occurred in Largo da Boa Esperança, in Queluz, “in an accommodation where about 450 pilgrims of French nationality are located”.

“Two firecrackers were thrown, which caused fear among the pilgrims”, but “there were no injuries”, he explained.

Another occurrence was recorded at Algés CP station, where a Czech pilgrim “had an epileptic seizure inside the train” and was transported to São Francisco Xavier Hospital.

This caused “the line to stop for 40 minutes, which caused disturbances among passengers”, SIS said.

According to the SIS, at the Marriot Hotel, “for religious reasons”, there were disturbances between a US citizen and pilgrims, who were expelled, and, in Rua da Madalena, two pickpockets were arrested.

During the second day of WYD, the PSP committed around 3,000 police officers to the security operation.

More than a million people are expected in Lisbon until Sunday for WYD, considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church and which is attended by Pope Francis.

The main initiatives of the day take place in Parque Eduardo VII, in the Belém area and in Parque Tejo, an enclosure of about 100 hectares north of Parque das Nações and on land in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.
