The search for a tourist couple who have been missing since Saturday off the north coast of the island of Madeira was called off at around 5pm today and will be suspended on Friday due to bad weather, the PSP said.
“Tomorrow [Friday], we will analyze the mapping of the terrain done today by the Madeira Operational Command’s drone,” explained Deputy Superintendent Luís Vieira, adding that, so far, no trace of the tourists has been found.
Today, the operation took place in a conditioned manner due to bad weather on the north coast of the island and the search by sea was even suspended, and on Friday the resources will only go into the field if there are any signs.
The tourists, a man and a woman of French nationality, aged 58 and 56, were on vacation in Madeira and were staying at a hotel in the parish of São Vicente.
The PSP revealed that the alert was raised on Saturday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who that day chose to rest in their accommodation, while her parents decided to go for a walk in the surrounding area.
The tourists disappeared without a trace.
The search operation is being coordinated by the Madeira Regional Public Security Police Command and also involves the Judicial Police (PJ), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Civil Protection Service, SANAS and the Maritime Authority.
The PJ is investigating a possible criminal situation, although so far there are no suspects.
