Search resumes to find the two missing from the shipwreck near Troia

Searches to find the two people missing in the sinking of a boat on Sunday near Troia, Grândola, resumed at around 07:30 today, the spokesman for the Portuguese Maritime Authority (AMN) told Lusa.

“The search has already begun. For now we have the NRP Viana do Castelo at sea, a lifeboat from Sesimbra, Maritime Police teams on land and AMN drones in the air,” said AMN and Portuguese Navy spokesman, Commander José Sousa Luís.

The search for two of the five people on board the boat, which sank about a mile and a half (approximately three kilometers) from Troia, was interrupted at 20:30 on Sunday and resumed at around 07:30 today.

Of the five people on the boat, all male, two are still missing, two were found dead and one survived, the 62-year-old owner and helmsman.

The boat sank around 07:00 on Sunday, but the Maritime Police only received the alert at 10:05.

On Sunday, the captain of the Port of Setúbal, Serrano Augusto, who is also the local commander of the Maritime Police, explained that the owner of the boat – so far the only survivor – had been surprised by a blow from the sea and, despite maneuvers, capsized and sank.

On board were two brothers, aged 21 and 23, one of whom was one of the fatalities whose body has already been found, a man aged around 40 and his son, aged between 11 and 13, who was also rescued lifeless.

According to the captain of the Port of Setúbal, “they’re all from the Grândola area, they live in the same street” and were fishing for cuttlefish, but only the child had a vest.
