Seven counties in the Faro district are at very high risk of rural fires today, a day when maximum temperatures will be high, with Évora reaching 39 degrees and Beja 38, according to IPMA.
The municipalities of Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, in the Faro district, have a very high fire risk.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has also placed more than 40 districts in the center and south of the continent (Faro, Beja, Évora, Setúbal, Lisbon, Santarém, Portalegre and Castelo Branco) at high risk of fire.
According to the IPMA, fire danger will remain high until at least Tuesday.
Fire danger, as determined by IPMA, has five levels, ranging from low to maximum.
Calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the amount of precipitation over the past 24 hours.
IPMA predicts that today’s weather on the mainland will be scarcely cloudy, increasing temporarily in the interior during the afternoon, with the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms in mountainous regions.
Generally light to moderate winds are also forecast, with the possibility of fog or mist forming in the morning in parts of the northern and central coasts, and a slight rise in minimum and maximum temperatures inland.
Minimum temperatures will range from 16 degrees Celsius (in Viseu, Bragança and Leiria) to 23 (in Faro and Portalegre), and maximums from 24 (in Aveiro) to 39 (in Évora).
