Singer Ana Lua Caiano performs today at the Roskilde festival in Denmark

Portuguese singer and multi-instrumentalist Ana Lua Caiano is performing today at the Roskilde festival in Denmark, which has been held annually since 1971 and whose edition this year began on June 29 and ends on Saturday.

Today at the festival, in addition to Ana Lua Caiano, there will also be performances from Portuguese-born, Danish-based singer Erika de Casier, Blondshell, Belle and Sebastian, Khruangbin, Skrilexx and 21 Savage.

Ana Lua Caiano released her debut album, “Vou ficar neste quadrado”, in March this year on the German label Glitterbeat. The album followed the EPs “Cheguei tarde a ontem” (2022) and “Se dançar é só depois” (2023), on which Ana Lua Caiano already wrote the lyrics and compositions, sang, played and produced.

On the EPs, she felt that she still didn’t have “enough autonomy” or knew “enough to be able to finish” the work, so she had help with the production, she recalled in an interview with Lusa in March.

On her debut album, she did everything herself, and the only person she collaborated with was musician Elly Janoville, and only because he doesn’t know how to play the flute.

Ana Lua Caiano hopes that what she creates, using traditional instruments such as the adufe, the drum or the wooden toy, but also rhythm boxes, keyboards, synthesizers or loop stations, “makes you think, reflect on something”.

“I talk a lot about reality and everyday problems, not imagined realities. It’s not autobiographical, but it’s about things that worry me and that I hear, it’s a bit of a mirror of some concerns that I see,” he said.

For Erika de Casier, who was born in Portugal in 1999 to a Cape Verdean father and a Belgian mother, where she lived until the age of 10 until settling in Denmark, this will be her second performance at Roskilde.

The first came in 2022, the year she released “Sensational”, her second album, but the first on the British label 4AD, which has released such names as Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Red House Painters, Grimes, The National and Future Islands.

Before going her own way and releasing her independent album “Essentials” (2019), Erika de Casier was part of the Danish electronic music collective Regelbau and the Saint Cava project with Andreas Vasengaard.

This year she released a new album, “Stills”.

This year’s Roskilde festival line-up includes artists and bands such as Foo Fighters, Sza, Doja Cat, Jane’s Addiction, Jungle, PJ Harvey, Jessie Ware, Kim Gordon, Marina Sena and Romy (from The XX).
